Your Yard ‘To Do’ List

Spring is the time to prepare your yard for the up coming summer months. Putting a few hours in now will enhance the beauty of your yard for the months to come.

Spring Clean Up ‘To Do’ List:

  • Clean up all branches and debris laying around. Old leaves will suffocate anything trying to grow underneath.
  • Aerate your lawn. Aerating pulls plugs of dirt up, this decomposes thatch, allows water to penetrate soil, improves root growth, oxygen and nutrients can reach the roots and prevents runoff of fertilizer.
  • Spread a natural (corn gluten) weed killer over entire lawn. This will kill weed seeds from last year and keep dandelions from popping up.
  • Over seed your lawn. This can also help with weed prevention because there is no room for the weeds to grow.
  • Replace mulch in landscaped beds. Added to existing mulch can suffocate plants. Be sure to spread the corn gluten before laying the mulch to help with weed control (don’t do this if you are using flower seeds). Mulch is great for garden beds because it keeps them moist and fertilizes them as it decomposes. Remember to use all natural bark, not the dyed variety.
  • Put a clean edge on all your beds. This can be done using an edger and should be done at least four times over the season to maintain a crisp, clean edge.
  • Once the lawn has been mowed a few times, this is a good time to spread controlled-release fertilizer. Fertilizer keeps your lawn healthy and green.
